The sun came out, the temperatures made it above freezing, and the desert willow is shedding its icy shroud.

A bonus picture for today - the late afternoon light behind the ice-coated tree was too lovely to pass up.

When my Aunt Mabel died, I got a couple of interesting things.  This book was one of them.  It was published in 1960 by The Reeves Publishing Company in San Angelo, Texas; Major Ernest N. Reeves is the author.  You probably recognize him from his earlier work "Living Sparks of Life"* and "Hurdling Obstacles."*

Wondering what fine expressions are included?  Here's a sample of a pair of contiguous entries, which I will reproduce just as they are shown in the book:

POCKET GOPHER.  The pocket Gopher is able to run backward as fast and as easily as it can go forward.

GOOSE-PIMPLES.  To get extremely excited; a nerve reaction; thrilled; embarrassment sometimes reveals them; fear of being exposed.

(Why were these listed one behind the other?  Feel free to draw your own conclusions.)

* Actual titles listed.  I cannot make up anything this good.

This is the mark of a really good friend:  he lets you keep his brand new macro lens (that he just bought yesterday!) until the next time you get together - in April.

Thanks.

I hate cold weather.

This winter has been extra cold - in fact, there are a few places where there's still snow on the ground from the December 23rd storm.  That's just not the way things are supposed to work here in Texas.

I wondered if gazing upon this photograph from the Bahamas might make me feel warmer.... No, it really didn't.

I guess waiting for summer is the best option.

If this were in color, it would be easy to tell it is a photo of radishes.  The black and white makes it slightly more ambiguous, don't you think?

Welcome to Vintage Photo Day here at the blog.

These four farmworkers are my cousins, my sister, and I. As you can see, the three girls in dresses (Dresses? Seriously?) don't seem to be doing any of the work. I wonder how we got my sister (1) to wear pants instead of a dress and (2) to actually pick cotton.

A new beginning

Today starts the second year of my photo-a-day blogs.

When I started last year's project, I wasn't entirely convinced that I could make it through the year, but I was willing to give it a try.  But I did it - made it through the entire year, taking a new photograph every day and posting a black and white version online. (Missed last year's blog?  You can see it here:  365 Photos in 2009)

I am not quite certain what I will do this year.  I don't want to repeat a whole year of black and white photographs, so I thought about posting images from my (considerable) backlog of photographs.  I thought about turning this blog into a forum for a photography project I have in mind called "Scene/Not Seen."  I thought about a lot of other ideas, and I was pretty sure the Right Idea would somehow reveal itself to me.  But, see, here it is already January 1, and I am still not sure what I am going to do, except post one photograph (unless I decide to post more) for every day of the year.

Keep checking back - we will find out together where this year's journey takes me.
